Book Recommendations

Macci, our newest Marketing Coordinator, is going to share with you what she’s reading in the month of January.

I was perusing hoopla’s selection of E-books and audiobooks and found “Hunter” by Mercedes Lackey a New York Times #1 Best Seller in the Young Adult E-Book Category. “Hunter” is Book One in a series of three. The description starts, “Centuries ago, the barriers between our world and the Otherworld were slashed open allowing hideous fantastical monsters to wreak havoc; destroying entire cities in their wake.” Hideous, fantastical monsters… who wouldn’t want to read that? I was hooked by the description, and have continued to stay hooked throughout my read.

The story is about Joyeaux, or Joy, and her experience as a Hunter. In this post-apocalyptic world, Hunters are the few that can perform magic, and it is their duty to protect the Cits (a.k.a civilians) from the Othersiders – those hideous fantastical beasts mentioned prior. She is called away from her close-knit mountain community to Apex City, where the best Hunters go to protect the most important people. She soon realizes that Apex isn’t quite as glorious as the leaders would have everyone believe. The Cits are oblivious to any seedy actions from the leaders of Apex, because they are too engrossed with Joy and her Hunter colleagues’ appearances on their reality television show. Joy uncovers a terrifying conspiracy and worries it may be too late to stop it. I can’t wait to see where this story ends up and to read the rest of the books in this series. The entire series is available on hoopla and physical copies can be requested from other libraries.

I am also currently reading “Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition” by Kate Hudson. I had previously read her book, “Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body” and loved her voice as an author, very laidback and still encouraging. I was so excited to hear that she had published another book. Before, she talked about ways to be mindful of our health of our mind and body. In this book she discusses her attitude on gatherings and how to stay in the moment during these gatherings. Often times when someone is throwing a party they are too worried about everything going smoothly, and not worried enough on enjoying themselves and the company there. Kate also shares healthy and tasty recipes in her book, as well as checklists for events, in order to keep the audience engaged. I wanted to read this book, because I am newly graduated from college, and it is time for the real world. I can’t wait to make memories and traditions with my fiancé and our friends and family.
